Railway Women Coach Rules: Men Could Face Up to Rs 5,000 Fine for Entry

Railways, through a post on its official X platform, stated that entering a coach reserved for women passengers without permission is against the rules. A passenger found violating the rule may face action and a fine. Here are the key provisions related to entry into women-reserved coaches.

If a passenger enters a women’s coach without permission, immediate action can be taken against them. In such cases, an initial fine of up to Rs 500 may be imposed. If the passenger is found guilty, the fine can go up to Rs 2,500. However, if a passenger refuses to pay the fine, a penalty of up to Rs 5,000 may be imposed.

Passengers are therefore advised to check the category of passengers for which a coach is reserved before boarding a train.

Railways has also clarified the position regarding transgender passengers through a post shared on its official X platform. The rule is stated to not apply to transgender persons covered under the definition provided in the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019.

The Southern Railway has also shared a video to explain the rule to passengers. The video shows women boarding a reserved coach marked “LADIES” after the train stops at a station. During the same time, a male passenger also enters the coach. The ticket-checking staff present at the spot then stops the passenger and informs him about the rules governing entry into a women-reserved coach.

The railway’s clarification highlights the importance of checking coach reservations before boarding, particularly when a coach is specifically designated for women passengers.
